As the assistant dean for pre-health advising and academic assistance at Barnard College for nearly nine years, Adjua Starks guided students through the process of applying to health professional schools. Her responsibilities included writing from 25 to 40 committee letters each summer, as well as coordinating and managing various tutoring and academic assistance programs. Prior to accepting the position at Barnard College, Adjua Starks spent eight years as the associate director and public interest coordinator of New York Law School’s Department of Professional Development.
A graduate of Cornell Law School, Adjua Starks has held positions with the Community Office of Legal Assistance, Inc. (the COLA Project), and the law firm of Stevens, Hinds & White, P.C., in New York City. Actively involved in initiatives related to race and diversity, she is a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and assisted with a black history exhibit at the Museum of Impact in Brooklyn, New York. Additionally, Ms. Starks is a past member of the Black Law Students Association and the Employment Diversity Committee of the National Association for Law Placement.
